Why did you choose to pursue a career in healthcare?

It has always been something that I was passionate about, even from a young age.

What were some meaningful extracurricular activities that you were involved in while at UConn?

I held a job at Student Health and Wellness (SHAW) for three years that allowed me to interact with all the medical professionals who allow the infirmary to function. This lead to opportunities to shadow some of the orthopedic surgeons that were working there as well. I also worked with UConn Women's Basketball for two years; they truly showed me how to be a professional. They showed me the level of dedication you must have for your craft in order to be great at it.

What did you do during your growth year(s) and what did you learn?

I took the years off in between undergrad and medical school. Upon graduation from UConn, I did a post-baccalaureate program in NYC to take some higher-level science courses and prove my abilities on paper. I got involved with a biochemical research lab and presented posters at the university research day. I worked as a personal trainer and STEM tutor at that time as well.

What are some ways that you take care of your mental health and overall wellbeing?

I personally enjoy working out and listening to music as a quick way to get away from all the stress of the profession. I often talk to family members or close friends when things become overwhelming. Being able to take a step back and monitor your own mental health is very important.

What advice do you have for aspiring pre-health students?

Work hard. Be confident. Get involved. Do not sell yourself short. If you fail, try again and come back stronger. You will have to make sacrifices that your non-pre-health friends won't, but it will be worth it in the end.

What’s something that you wish you knew when you were in college?

Develop good study habits and patterns. Make connections and dive deep into the material you are learning. Time management is the key to success. Start early and exceed early. Use the resources around you to help propel yourself. If there is not the resource you need, inquire about how it may be provided. Find a mentor you trust to help guide you through the process. Do not be afraid to ask for help.
