Anthony Antony

My name is Anthony Antony (he/him/his) and I am a  junior majoring in Physiology & Neurobiology (PNB) and Sociology with minors in Chinese and Molecular & Cellular Biology (MCB). Understanding the social and cultural elements behind the healthcare system is an intricate part of the medical field today and I hope to work with health professionals to attain proper care for all patients, especially internationally. In my free time, I play tennis and basketball, co-host the Agents of Change podcast and Listening to Medical Minds podcast which attempts to end the stigma behind mental health issues in the medical community.

I participated in the Health Research Program where I was paired with a neuroscience lab at UConn Health studying neuroregeneration within primary neurons involved in vision headed by Dr. Ephraim Trakhtenberg. Under his guidance, I have enhanced my understanding of mechanisms related to neuroregenerative capabilities and received the UConn SURF Award to study integrin expression in relation to axon regeneration. I also investigate the optimization of motor neuron/Schwann cell co-culturing practices under Dr. Jianzhong Yu at the Physiology and Neurobiology Department of UConn, Storrs as continuation of the two-year LEAP program initiated by the department. On campus, I work as a Residential Assistant at Werth Tower for the sophomore Honors learning community. I also work closely with the Asian American Mentoring Program (AMP), Mansfield Middle School Tutoring, Medical Minds Matter Club, Pre-Med Society, and UConn Thunderaas.

Coming into college, the medical school application process and overall undergraduate pre-medical journey was all very new to me and difficult to understand. However, I was fortunate enough to have several advisors and upperclassmen mentors from administration, classes, and extracurriculars explain their experience through the process which has made it easier for me to navigate the required coursework and how to grow as a student by managing my time appropriately. As a Health Professions Peer Ambassador, I hope to guide students through their own journey by providing pertinent information and support.

I would love to connect with you about…

  • Connecting with research opportunities
  • Developing leadership skills
  • Being a Resident Assistant
